What is a Moth?
The International Moth class dates back to 1928, but it's rules have
encouraged constant development and innovation. The boats have evolved from
wooden dinghies to narrow carbon fiber hulls with outriggers and hydrofoils.
The one hull, one sail and one sailor rules together with it's small
dimensions make one off home builds affordable, and realistic.
Modern Moths weight less than half the weight of their sailor and fly
above the water on their foils. The International Moth is a unique high
performance sailing experience, that challenges the best sailors, designers
and builders from all over the world. You can also join in!
What People Say about Moths
"On the weekend I clocked over 15 knots upwind in about 15-18 knots of wind,
which felt bloody unreal. And this was constant too, ie 13 to 15.5 knots all
the time. But max downwind speed was only 19.2 knots, due to the chop on the
bay at the time."
...Rohan Veal
"It is all i hoped it would be, breathtaking speed, bizarre silence, some
interesting crashes, and loads of stunned onlookers. a B14 tried to take me
down a run, but I went straight over the top of him, and then soaked down to a
lower line than him and just sailed away! Mainsheet almost on the centreline,
sitting in on the wing, doing some stupid speed for 10 knots of windspeed. an
international canoe with kite gave up straight away, and just commented on how
cool it looked! most of the youth 29er squad have decided what boat they want
in a few years, after a few flybys past them!
Forget 14's in san fran, 5 years of olympic tornado sailing, a blast across
portland harbour in 8/10 knots today several feet above the water was my
favourite sailing moment."
...Adam May
"Going from 50kmh to zero is not much fun, but in the right conditions it's
more exciting than 18-foot skiffs."
...Scott Babbage
